Built From Lived Experience

MoodStead was not born in a boardroom. It was born in the moments between hospital visits, sleepless nights, and the quiet fight to stay grounded.

The Story Behind MoodStead

I am a software developer from Romania. I build things with PHP and Laravel. But the reason MoodStead exists has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with survival.

I live with schizoaffective disorder.

For years, I have been navigating a complicated mix of symptoms: anxiety that makes my chest feel like it is caving in, intrusive thoughts that hijack my focus, auditory hallucinations that get louder whenever I step outside my front door, mood swings that can shift everything in an hour. My home is my comfort zone. Inside, I can breathe. Outside, things get harder.

I am under psychiatric treatment. I take Xeplion, Rispolept, and Orfiril Long. The medication helps, but it does not make everything disappear. The hallucinations are still there, especially outside. The anxiety still spikes, especially at night. And the fear of losing control of my own mind — that one never fully goes away.

There have been dark chapters. Multiple psychiatric hospitalizations. Ambulance rides. Police escorts to the hospital. Being admitted to psychiatric wards where I did not know if I would come back as myself. These were some of the most vulnerable moments of my life, and I carry them with me every day.

Why I Built This

MoodStead was never meant to be a product. It started as something I built for myself.

When anxiety spikes, when intrusive thoughts show up uninvited, when I start spiraling and feel disconnected from reality — I needed something to hold onto. Something that could help me pause, reflect, ground myself. Something that brings structure when everything inside feels like chaos.

So I started building tools. A mood tracker to see patterns. A thought record to challenge the lies my mind tells me. Breathing exercises for the moments when my chest tightens and the world narrows. A safety plan for the nights when everything feels too heavy.

MoodStead became my digital survival kit.

Then a close friend told me something that changed everything. He said: "There are probably many other people like you who struggle with similar things. Maybe this should not stay only for you."

That stuck with me. Because I know how lonely these experiences feel. When you are dealing with mental illness, especially something like schizoaffective disorder, it often feels like you are alone in a universe nobody else understands.

So I started thinking: what if this could help others too?

What MoodStead Is

MoodStead is not built by a corporation. It is not backed by investors who want growth metrics. It is not designed by people who read about mental health in a textbook.

It is built by someone who has been in the ambulance. Who has been admitted to psychiatric wards. Who knows what it feels like to think you are losing control of your own mind. And who is still trying, every single day, to build something meaningful from that pain.

MoodStead is a collection of supportive tools for people who:

  • Struggle with anxiety and need something to ground them
  • Feel trapped in their own thoughts and need a way out
  • Deal with mental health conditions and need daily structure
  • Need emotional clarity when everything feels overwhelming
  • Need something to hold onto during the difficult moments

What MoodStead Is (and Is Not)

I want to be completely transparent about this.

MoodStead IS

  • A tracking tool

A structured way to monitor your mood, sleep, medication, symptoms, and daily habits over time.

  • A therapy companion

Tools that complement your work with a therapist, including CBT exercises and behavioral activation plans.

  • A wellness journal

A private space to record your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in text or voice format.

  • A safety resource

A place to store your safety plan and warning signs so they are always accessible when you need them most.

MoodStead IS NOT

  • ×
    A replacement for therapy

MoodStead supplements professional care but does not replace the relationship with a qualified therapist or psychiatrist.

  • ×
    A medical device

MoodStead is not FDA-approved or certified as a medical device. It is a wellness and self-management tool.

  • ×
    A crisis hotline

If you are in immediate danger, please call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), 911, or your local emergency services.

  • ×
    A diagnostic tool

MoodStead does not diagnose mental health conditions. Only a qualified healthcare professional can provide a diagnosis.

How It Is Built

Every decision is guided by three principles I learned the hard way.

Evidence-Based

Every tool is grounded in clinical research. The CBT thought records follow the structure used in actual therapy sessions. Behavioral activation exercises come from established depression treatment protocols. The safety plan follows the Stanley-Brown model.

Privacy-First

I know how personal this data is because it is my data too. Everything is encrypted. Nothing is sold. Nothing is shared with advertisers. You can export or delete your data at any time.

Calming by Design

I know what it feels like to open an app while anxious and be overwhelmed by bright colors and aggressive interfaces. MoodStead uses warm tones, soft shapes, and generous spacing on purpose.

I am not trying to present myself as a hero or a success story. I am simply someone still learning how to live with his mind. There are good days and bad days.

MoodStead is part of that journey. It is not finished. It will probably never be finished, because recovery is not a destination — it is something you work at every day.

If you are reading this and you feel lost, or scared, or alone in what you are going through — I want you to know that someone who feels the same way built this for people like us.

This is not just a product. It is part of someone's survival story.
